WordPress 3.0

I have been an avid WordPress fan since the beginning and waiting for 3.0 is tougher than I thought! There are many new features coming out that will not only make our life easier when developing custom solutions, but will also take this CMS to the next level.

Out of all the many new highlights and features of the new version, I have put together my list of favourites:

Improved custom post types and taxonomies
Standalone WordPress & WPMU
Swanky new/simple/wide default theme
Removing all tags in quick edit
New template files for front page, author page, custom post type page

The proposed launch date for this version was set for May 2010, however after digging through the outstanding tickets and workflow of the WordPress trac, it seems launch date may be June 2010.

WordPress 2.9 – Indeed is very fine!

WordPress 2.9 has just been released for download, and there are some cool features in this release. Video embedding has always been a complicating task for many, and now WordPress made it easy! No need to worry about all the embed HTML code, just paste the URL and what do you have?? Auto embed!!

Another cool feature is the ability to edit images within WordPress. Now you can crop, flip, rotate etc… as soon as you’ve uploaded your image. No need to worry about editing the files before uploading! Makes it easy for those on the go…

Old Versions of WordPress Under Attack

Do you run an older version of WordPress?? You may be vulnerable to an attack!

Lorelle on WordPress discovered that a nasty attack is exploiting security holes in previous versions of the blogging software, creating a new “hidden” Administrator account and getting right down to the database level. These attacks are said to be “growing by the hour”. Lorelle writes:

There are two clues that your WordPress site has been attacked.

There are strange additions to the pretty permalinks, such as example.com/category/post-title/%&(%7B$%7Beval(base64_decode($_SERVER%5BHTTP_REFER ER%5D))%7D%7D|.+)&%/. The keywords are “eval” and “base64_decode.”
The second clue is that a “back door” was created by a “hidden” Administrator. Check your site users for “Administrator (2)” or a name you do not recognize. You will probably be unable to access that account.

All users are advised to upgrade to the latest version of WordPress immediately. Let us know if we can help with your upgrade.
