Testing on all major browsers is essential when designing and developing your website. A client asked me the other day what the majority of people are using for their browser, and thanks to W3Schools, we get an approximate based on their website log files.
Here is what August looked like over the past 2 years:
| IE 6 | IE 7 | IE 8 | Firefox | Chrome | Safari | Opera | |
| August 2009 | 13.6% | 15.1% | 10.6% | 47.4% | 7.0% | 3.3% | 2.1% |
| August 2008 | 24.5% | 26.0% | N/A | 43.7% | NA | 2.6% | 2.1% |
As you can see, the dreaded IE 6 is down dramatically which is a relief to almost all developers. IE 6 is outdated and incompatible with many new web technologies.

Thanks for that! Glad to see that Internet Explorer 6 is starting to fade away.
Not so sure IE 7 and 8 are as far down the scale as that. I’m going to have to read up on how they tally results. Thanks for the post.
